Research conducted at UC Davis in Sacramento, California, revealed that individuals who take the nutritional supplements on a daily basis reduces the risk of bone fractures regardless of gender and age.

The findings represent a large effort from researchers around the world, determining the benefits of calcium and vitamin D in post-menopausal women, adult men and younger patients of both genders.

Various reports have confirmed that the supplements help post-menopausal women prevent osteoporosis, which affects roughly 8 million American women.

The researchers discovered that combining both of the supplements provides better results than when they are taken separately.

“This combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find,” explained co-author John Robbins, a professor at UC Davis. “We now need to investigate the best dosage, duration and optimal way for people to take it.”

Although nutritional supplements such as vitamin D and calcium can help increase the strength of bones, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism indicates that therapies used to make HIV patients live longer can be detrimental to bone mineral density.

Previous studies have indicated that HIV patients have a higher prevalence of low bone density due to metabolic complications brought on by treatment.

It has also been found that post-menopausal women are among the highest groups for those at risk for osteoporotic fractures.

The new study decided to combine the groups, noting that there was a significant risk factor for those who suffer from both issues, making HIV-positive post-menopausal women one of the most susceptible groups to the ailment.

“Estrogen protects against the effect of cytokines on bone resorption,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Michael Yin. “Therefore, as HIV-positive women become estrogen deficient during menopause, they may be at higher risk for accelerated bone loss and fracture.”

New research is suggesting that there is a link between depression and a loss of bone mass, which could lead to bone breakage and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is more common among women than men, and is a condition that causes bones to weaken and possibly fracture, which is why some nutritionists recommend taking nutritional supplements such as vitamin D and calcium to keep bones strong.

According to a study found in the journal Biological Psychiatry, it was found that after testing thousands of individuals, there was substantially less bone density in depressed individuals than the mentally healthy.

The results showed that after testing 2,327 depressed and 21,141 non-depressed patients, depressed individuals were at a higher risk of osteoporosis.

“All individuals psychiatrically diagnosed with major depression are at risk for developing osteoporosis, with depressed young women showing the highest risk,” wrote the researchers.

Because of these findings, the researchers feel that it’s a good idea for depressed patients to get checkups to try and prevent the development of osteoporosis.

It’s been reported that aromatherapy and carbohydrates may be used as a way to curb overeating during the holiday season.

Experts feel that stress and anxiety are a large reason why people tend to overeat during the holiday season, which is why it’s being suggested that one takes time out for themselves in order to calm down. Using aromas such as eucalyptus may also help ease the stress.

It was also noted that nutritional supplements such as fiber might help with appetite control; and that when you do sit down to eat, try healthy protein. Another way to curb hunger is by eating complex carbohydrates that can be found in stuffing before sitting down to the meal, which will lead you to become fuller faster.

If you’re already feeling full by dessert time, experts feel this will be the best way to control you from reaching for that extra piece of pie, leading to unwanted cravings down the road.

“That pie often opens the floodgates to cravings, and many of us have spent holiday season after holiday season telling ourselves to have just one little treat,” said Dr. Denise Lamothe, a psychologist who studies emotional eating.

While nutritional supplements such as ginko biloba may help with improving memory, a study from Northwestern University indicates that even though the participants were in a deep sleep, they were able to hear sounds that enhanced their memory when they awoke.

The study played 25 different sounds while the participants slept, including a cat meowing and a tea kettle whistle.

Previously, the participants were asked to drag matching objects across a computer screen as a way of spatial learning. It was found the participants were more accurate in the exercise their nap with the sounds.

Researchers believe that this study may be key in determining how sleep affects memory retention.

“We are beginning to see that deep sleep actually is a key time for memory processing,” said senior author Ken Paller.

Paller added that this study will open the door to many questions and that further research is needed to understand how memory process during the sleep stage.

A new study is suggesting that different extra fat locations may lead to dangerous blood clots for men and women.

According to research in the Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, extra pounds could result in blood clots, however, the locations are different depending on the gender.

It was found that men have a higher risk of blood clots when they have more weight around their waist, while women have a higher risk if they have extra pounds on their hips.

Originally, it was believed that women should be encouraged to have larger hips, as they may work as a protective shield against blood clots. This new research is running counter to that theory.

The researchers feel it’s because previous studies only measured body mass index (BMI) when studying blood clots, and didn’t pinpoint where the extra fat was located.

“The BMI is a marker of excess weight and correlates well with body fat content in adults; however, it fails to consider the distribution of body fat,” explained study leader Dr. Marianne Tang Severinsen.

Nutritional supplements such as coumarins, which are found in various herbs, work as a blood thinner, and may be a good idea to take if you feel you’re at risk.

According to Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics, two new studies are indicating that certain pain killers may be the cause of the growth of certain cancers.

It was found that when lung cancer cells were shielded from opiates, there was a reduction in cell production, invasion and migration in different models.

The study looked at cancer patients that were given other drugs that didn’t incorporate opiate, and noticed that some of the patients defied life expectancy.

The researchers are looking at these studies further; as the results could completely change the way people are medicated today.

“If confirmed clinically, this could change how we do surgical anesthesia for our cancer patients,” said lead author of both studies, Dr. Patrick Singleton.

It was noted that mice that were on different medication reduced the tumor growth by 90 percent, but still recognized that further study is a must.

Scientists have discovered a significant correlation between blood pressure and outdoor temperature in a study that included a large sample of elderly adults.

The study was conducted by French scientists who monitored 8,801 French participants over the age of 65 and found that systolic and diastolic blood pressure values differed significantly across the four seasons of the year.

They noted that the higher the temperature, the greater the decrease in blood pressure. For example, systolic blood pressure decreased with increasing temperature, with an 8.0 mm Hg decrease between the lowest (less than 46.22 F) and the highest (70.16 F) temperatures.

In general, high blood pressure was found in 33.4 percent of participants during winter and 23.8 percent during summer, and these changes were most pronounced in those 80 years or older.

“Because the risk of stroke or aneurysmal rupture is highest in the elderly, improved protection against these diseases by close monitoring of blood pressure when outdoor temperature is very low could be considered,” the researchers concluded.

Health practitioners have also recommended exercise and nutritional supplements to help improve circulation and lower blood pressure.

Amazing blood pressure secret from the Japanese

For more than 1,000 years, people in Japan have consumed a soy-based food called natto, which contains a unique enzyme called nattokinase. By eating this powerful enzyme, the Japanese keep their blood vessels clear and free of dangerous blood clots.

Plus, there’s an amazing side effect—less blood pressure is needed to push blood through your arteries. In fact, a blue ribbon study in Japan showed a 10.9% drop in systolic blood pressure and a 9.7% drop in diastolic blood pressure with nattokinase supplementation.

Now, after many centuries in secrecy, nattokinase is finally available in America.
Clearly, if you want to support healthy circulation and enjoy normal blood pressure at the same time, nattokinase is the nutrient for you. To find out how to get this scientifically proven enzyme in an inexpensive daily supplement

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine followed 44 patients who had gastric bypass surgery. They found that those who received a probiotic supplement everyday for three months following their procedure had a significantly higher weight loss as well as higher levels of vitamin B12 than those who got a placebo pill.

The group who received the probiotics had a 47.6 percent weight loss compared with a 38.5 percent loss in the control group.

Almost two-thirds, or 66 percent, of adult Americans are overweight. Gastric bypass is the most common weight loss surgery because it is associated with fewer complications than other interventions.

Vitamin B12 is important for proper metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and health of the central nervous system.

Probiotics are good bacteria that are known to aid digestion. They can be found in foods like yogurt and other cultured milk products, miso, tempeh, some juices and soy beverages. They can also be taken as a nutritional health supplement.

In the quest to refine youth-preserving natural treatments, scientists have conducted experiments which showed light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a cream based on green tea extract may help smooth facial wrinkles.

Non-invasive phototherapy has been used to treat skin imperfections for decades, but German scientists believe combining it with antioxidant-rich great tea lotion will take the treatment to a new level by eliminating potentially harmful reactive oxygen species produced by light therapy.

In the study, the researchers applied a daily combination of LED light and green tea cream to the wrinkles of a human volunteer for one month and found it produced smoother skin, including “less pronounced wrinkle levels, shorter wrinkle valleys and juvenile complexion,” they say.

The results prompted them to hail the experiment as opening a new way to effective, safe and non-surgical rejuvenation programs, in addition to shedding new light on the impact reactive oxygen species have on cellular aging.

Those looking for ways to boost their immunity and a preserve youthful appearance may also benefit from antioxidant nutritional supplements.
